Choosing the right home is crucial for NDIS participants with SDA funding who wish to live with their loved ones. With the introduction of Appendix H in the 2023-24 SDA Pricing Arrangements, participants now have greater flexibility to live with family members or partners who are not eligible for SDA.
This important change helps keep families together while ensuring participants receive appropriate funding based on their living situation.
How Vera Living Supported an Adelaide Family of Five with Appendix H
Simon* a devoted husband and father of two, with another baby on the way was living in a private rental with his family that didn’t meet his needs. He experienced substantial mobility and self-care impairments due to Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of Arthritis that causes inflammation in the joints and ligaments of the spine.
Simon’s rental home lacked the space he needed to carry out self-care and move around in his wheelchair. After being unable to find an SDA provider to meet his requirements and accommodate his family, he contacted Vera Living in search of a suitable home.
The Participant Engagement Specialist listened to his needs: sufficient space for him and his family, assistive technology, and full accessibility, and worked with Simon and his wife to find the right home in their desired community. They supported them through the process of using Appendix H of SDA funding which allows families to live together. The family settled on a contemporary three-bedroom home near Adelaide. Light and spacious, with an accessible garden and assistive technology throughout, the thoughtfully designed home met their needs.
After almost a year in their home, and with the arrival of their beautiful third baby, their life has been transformed. Spacious rooms, accessibility and bespoke modifications allow Simon to easily navigate his home and carry out self-care. They feel it’s the perfect environment for their family to thrive and plan to stay in the home long-term.
